11 Creative Holiday-Decorating Ideas

October 30, 2013

Decorating for the holidays can be a lot of fun, especially if you have some creative ideas that help your house look more like a home. There is no reason for you to spend hundreds of dollars on decorations when many of them can be made yourself. What's more, some of the decorative items you choose can be used in ways you might not have considered.

1. Make a Wreath from Ribbons and Ornaments

You can purchase a basic twig wreath from virtually any crafting supply story. Tie festive ribbon into small knots until the wreath is plush and full. You can also hot glue plastic ornaments to the wreath to give it that festive flair.

2. Make Your Own Tree Ornaments

You can pick up a package of glass ornaments from any craft store for a reasonable price. Paint the glass on the outside or fill the ornament with a small amount of paint and twirl it around until the interior is covered.

3. Beautiful Ribbon Garland

Garland can be used around the tree or around the home in various locations. Just tie together small snippets of ribbon to create a beautiful homey look that you are sure to love displaying for all.

4. Fill a Mason Jar With Lights

Get a small canning jar and fill it with a very short strand of clear or colored lights. You will love the look this gives to the room at night when you plug in the lights.

5. Print Online Greetings

You can create your own sayings on your computer or search for some on the Internet. Print out these decorative sayings and add them to your frames to add some holiday elegance to just about any room.

6. Create a Centerpiece

You don't have to spend a lot of money on a brand new centerpiece. Revive the flower vase on your table by putting holiday ribbon around the basket or vase and filling it with ornamental holiday sprigs.

7. Candy-filled Jars

Fill a candy or apothecary jar with red and white mints or candy canes. You will love showing off these knick-knacks in an entrance way because of how truly bright and whimsical they are.

8. Add Bows to Household Items

Bows and ribbons are your best friend when it comes to decorating a room without spending a lot of money. Tie bows around couch pillows or add a ribbon to a normal living room lamp to give it that holiday touch.

9. Make a Kissing Ball

Kissing balls are very popular during the holiday season, but they can be quite expensive. You can make your own kissing ball by pinning ribbon pieces to a foam ball that can be found in almost every craft store or aisle.

10. Candles in Painted Jars

Paint a Mason jar with one coat of festive paint and put a candle into the jar. Light the candle and you will be amazed at how beautifully it glows through the paint. Be sure to choose a fire-retardant paint when doing this project idea.

11. Painted Pine Cones

You can find pine cones either on your property itself or in crafting stores. Spray paint the pine cones a variety of different festive colors and add them to a bowl or jar so that they shine in their own beauty.

Decorative ideas can be a lot of fun when preparing for the holidays. Making things yourself can save you some money, and it can provide you with hours of entertainment. Do some of these projects with your kids to get them involved in the fun, as well.
